今年もいよいよクリスマス本番を迎えようとしています。クリスマスソングやツリーなど、街はクリスマス一色です。にぎやかでワクワクするこの季節になると、いつも心に引っかかることがあります。

それは、このクリスマスにも、悲しみや苦しみ、不安を抱えて過ごしておられる方々がたくさんおられるということです。周囲の人たちが楽しそうに過ごしているのを見れば見るほど、孤独を覚え、自分の抱えている闇がより一層深く感じられる、そんなつらい時期を過ごしたことのある方も多いのではないでしょうか。

イエス様がお生まれになった場面の記録を読むとき、私は心が慰められます。

イエス様は、全宇宙の王であったにもかかわらず、盛大に誕生を祝われることはなく、むしろ社会のすみっこにひっそりと暮らしているような人たちが、真っ先にこの素晴らしい知らせを知ることになりました。

このようにお生まれになったイエス様は、やがて多くの人々を教え、癒し、幸福にするために自らを犠牲にして働かれました。これはイエス様の説教の一節です。

「こころの貧しい人たちは、さいわいである、天国は彼らのものである。悲しんでいる人たちは、さいわいである、彼らは慰められるであろう。」（新約聖書　マタイによる福音書5：3，4　口語訳）

神様、どうかいま病や心の苦しみの最中にある人をかえりみてください。このクリスマスの季節に、深い悲しみの中にある人の心に、あなただけがお与えになることが出来る、本当の慰めを注いでください。―――心からそう祈りたいと思います。

Christmas is just around the corner and streets are in full Christmas mode. Every year in this particular period when everyone is happy and excited, there is one thing that bothers me that makes me not able to sincerely enjoy this moment.

Even in this fun atmosphere, there are many people who are suffering from helpless diseases or depression. It makes their suffering even worse when in Christmas people around are having precious time with their loved ones and having fun. Maybe you’ve had this experience too.

However, when I read the scene of Jesus’ birth, my heart is comforted. Jesus was the king of the universe, but when Jesus was born on earth, there was no grand celebration at all. It was the scholar from foreign country and the shepherds who were not of the highest social status that heard this wonderful news of Jesus’ birth and came to celebrate Him.

Jesus surrenders His whole life teaching, healing and serving people to make them enter the kingdom of heaven. This is one verse from the sermon on the mount.

 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted(Matthew 5:3,4 ESV).

I sincerely pray that Jesus will give heavenly comfort that only Jesus can provide to those who are in the midst of suffering, to those who are depressed, and to those who are in pain especially in this season of Christmas.

先日山登りに行きました。絶好の天気に恵まれ、美しい自然を堪能することが出来ました。頂上で写真を撮り、景色を楽しんだあと、その日の2つ目の頂上を目指しました。少し気がせいていたのでしょうか、下り坂で木の根に足を引っ掛けてつまずいてしまいました。自分では「気をつけて歩いている」「大丈夫、転ばない」と思っていたのですが、見事に転んでひざをすりむきました。

転ぶことが好きな人はいません。しかし、「自分はこれまでの人生でつまずいたことがない」という人はいません。生きるということは、転んだり失敗したりすることの連続です。

わたしはイエス様がペテロに語られたこの言葉が大好きです。

「シモン、シモン、サタンはあなたがたを、小麦のようにふるいにかけることを神に願って聞き入れられた。しかし、わたしはあなたのために、信仰が無くならないように祈った。だから、あなたは立ち直ったら、兄弟たちを力づけてやりなさい。」

（新約聖書　ルカによる福音書22：31，32　新共同訳）

「転ばぬ先の杖」という言葉がありますが、イエス様はシモン・ペテロがつまずく前から彼のために祈り、彼が立ち直る道筋を用意しておられました。同じように私たちがそれぞれの人生で経験するつまずきの経験の中に、イエス様は特別な目的と計画を備えていて下さるのだ、そう思うと心に希望が湧いて来ます。

「あなたは立ち直ったら、兄弟を力づけてやりなさい」あなたが立ち直ったとき、イエス様から与えられている使命は何でしょうか？私たちがその使命を果たすことが出来るように、イエス様は今日も祈ってくださっています。

I went hiking the other day. The weather was great on that day, so I was able to enjoy the nature God has created. I enjoyed the beautiful scenery on the top of the mountain and as I was heading back, I stumbled on the root and injured my knee even though I was being careful not to fall down.

No one likes falling down. However, there is no one who never fell down in their lives. Life is a series of stumble or failure. I love what Jesus said to Peter when he failed.

“Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat, but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.”(Luke 22:31,32 ESV)

Jesus prayed for Peter before he failed and prepared a way to get over. When we stumble in our lives, we have hope in Jesus who prays for us even before we fail and prepares for us a way to get over.

Jesus gives certain mission to Peter: “when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.”

What is your mission that Jesus is giving you when you get over? Jesus is praying for us today that we might be able to accomplish what He has called us to do.

12月1日の安息日午後、八王子市内のある病院を訪問してキャロリングをさせていただきました。この病院では、もう20年以上も続けてクリスマスの時期にキャロリングをさせていただいています。私は今回で6回目の参加でしたが、とても有意義な時間を過ごすことができました。

2時間半という限られた時間で6病棟を回って讃美歌を歌うのは、結構ハードスケジュールです。しかし、病棟を回っていくうちに、参加した聖歌隊の皆さんの顔が活き活きとした表情に変わっていったのが印象的でした。

涙を流しながら歌声に耳を傾けてくださる方。一緒に大きな声で歌ってくださる方。じぃっと見守ってくださる方…。それぞれのスタイルで私たちを迎え、このプログラムに参加してくださる入院中の皆さんから、元気をいただきました。

わたしの選ぶ断食とはこれではないか。悪による束縛を断ち、軛の結び目をほどいて／虐げられた人を解放し、軛をことごとく折ること。更に、飢えた人にあなたのパンを裂き与え／さまよう貧しい人を家に招き入れ／裸の人に会えば衣を着せかけ／同胞に助けを惜しまないこと。そうすれば、あなたの光は曙のように射し出で／あなたの傷は速やかにいやされる。あなたの正義があなたを先導し／主の栄光があなたのしんがりを守る。

聖書は私たちに、「あなたの持っているものを他者に与えるとき、あなたの傷が癒されるのだ」と教えています。これはまた、私たちにすべてを与えるためにこの地上にお生まれくださったイエス様の生涯が私たちに教えていることではないでしょうか。このクリスマスの季節に「あなたの光は曙のように射し出でる」という主の御言葉が実現しますように。

I visited a hospital with members of choir on last Sabbath. We sang some Christmas carol, and told the Christmas message. I’m grateful to the hospital because they have accepted our visitation for more than 20 years on every Christmas season. That was the sixth visit for me. It was meaningful time to us.

During 2 hours 30 minutes we visited 6 wards. It was a tight schedule. However, I noticed that the facial expressions of the choir members were getting shine.

Some patients listened to our songs while crying. Other patients sang with us in loud voice. Other patients were just listening carefully. We were encouraged by their attitude.

“I will tell you the kind of special day I want.
I want you to free the people you have put in prison unfairly.
    Undo their chains.
Free those to whom you are unfair.
    Free them from their hard labor.
I want you to share your food with hungry people.
    I want you to bring poor, homeless people into your own homes.
When you see someone who has no clothes, give him yours.
    Don’t refuse to help your own relatives.
If you do these things, your light will shine like the dawn.
    Then your wounds will quickly heal.
Your God will walk before you,
    and the glory of the Lord will protect you from behind(Isaiah 58:6-8 ICB).

The Scripture are teaching that if we give something to others, we will receive big blessing and our wounds will heal quickly.

I would like to remember this principle that God gave us. And I hope to experience the promise of God during Christmas season.

自動車運転免許証の更新手続きに行ってきました。講習の中で、横断歩道付近での自動車／歩行者の事故が依然として多いという話を聞きました。そしてその中で、運転者は歩行者の気持ちになって運転をすることが大事であると教えていただきました。

確かに、自分が車を運転しているとき、歩行者用信号が青の点滅になっているのに横断歩道にかけ込んで来る人がいると「おいおい、かんべんしてよ～」という気持ちになる私ですが、自分が歩行者のときには、案外同じことを平気でしていることに気づかされました。

いつも車を運転するだけでなく、歩行者になったり、自転車に乗ったりすることは、道路上のお互いの立場や気持ちを理解する助けになると思います。

聖書には次のように書かれています。

何事も利己心や虚栄心からするのではなく、へりくだって、互いに相手を自分よりも優れた者と考え、めいめい自分のことだけでなく、他人のことにも注意を払いなさい。

「理解する」という言葉を英語では“Understand”と言います。日本語に直訳すると「下に立つ」となります。私たちが、様々な人間関係の中でお互いに自分の立場や思いから一歩離れて、相手の側に立って考えるとき、また、へりくだって（相手の下に立って）相手を思いやるときに、お互いに対する理解や信頼を深めることができるのではないでしょうか。

I went to the police office for renew my driver’s license this week. So I got a lecture. The instructor told us. “There are still many accidents of pedestrians and cars at the intersection still now.”

And he said, drivers must have thoughtful consideration to pedestrians.

I am irritated when a pedestrian does not keep the signal while I’m driving. However, I noticed that I was doing the same thing when I walked on the road. When I drive a car it is important to understand what pedestrians are thinking.

 When you do things, do not let selfishness or pride be your guide. Be humble and give more honor to others than to yourselves. Do not be interested only in your own life, but be interested in the lives of others.(Philippians 2:3,4 ICB)

The word “understand” is made from the words “under” and “stand”. In order to understand someone we need to “stand under”. That means being humble. And it is to sympathize with the feelings of the others.

This is an important principle that applies not only to driving but also to our human relations.

ある日、忙しい朝の時間に「聖書を読まなきゃ！」と自分に言い聞かせて、机に向かい聖書を開きました。その日に読む予定のページを開くと、次の言葉が目に飛び込んできました。

しかし同時にヨシャファトはイスラエルの王に、「まず主の言葉を求めてください」と言った。

ヨシャファトは南王国ユダの王でした。彼は分裂した北王国イスラエルと和解をした王として知られています。先の言葉は、イスラエル王に「わたしたちと一緒に敵と戦ってくれませんか？」と促された時の彼の応答です。

ヨシャファトには王としてなすべきことがたくさんあったことでしょう。国内の政治、そして外交問題など課題が山積していたかもしれません。しかし、この言葉に彼が第一にしていたものがはっきりとあらわされています。それは、イエス様が私たちに与えられた命令と約束の言葉でもあります。イエス様はこう言われました。

何よりもまず、神の国と神の義を求めなさい。そうすれば、これらのものはみな加えて与えられる。だから、明日のことまで思い悩むな。明日のことは明日自らが思い悩む。その日の苦労は、その日だけで十分である。

私は先のことが心配で夜眠れなくなったときに、この聖句を読むようにしています。これは、私たちが第一のものを第一とするとき、神様はすべての必要に応えてくださるという約束です。慌ただしく時間が流れ、すべきことが次々と押し寄せて来る現代にあって、聖書の言葉は私たちに力強く語りかけています。

One busy morning, I told myself. “I need to read the Bible.” And when I opened the Bible, this word came into my mind. This word corrected my mind.

And Jehoshaphat said to the king of Israel, “Inquire first for the word of the Lord.” (1 Kings 22:5 ESV)

Jehoshaphat was a king of Judah. He is known as the king who made Judah reconciled with Israel. When he was told the king of Israel “Please fight against enemies with us”, he answered like that.

He may be had many things had to do as a king. There were not only domestic problems but also international work. But this word reveals what his top priority was. It is in common with the words to which Jesus has spoken.

 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.(Matthew 6:33,34 ESV)

When I can’t sleep because of my worries, I read this Scripture. It makes me calm very much. Jesus has promised us that if we keep His command as our top priority, he give us everything we need. It’s quite busy era that we are living. God’s Word speaks strongly to us.
